The Historical Backdrop

The narrative terrain of “Harmony” is steeped in the veritable history of the Comedian Harmonists, a sextet of melody maestros whose tale of camaraderie, musical ascension, and eventual dissolution mirrors the larger social and political tapestry of their homeland. As the light of their fame shone brightly, the dark clouds of political unrest were gathering momentum in the heart of Germany, casting long shadows over their harmonious existence. 🎤
Harmony Musical BroadwayThe Comedian Harmonists weren’t just a singing ensemble; they were a symphony of diverse backgrounds and faiths, coming together to create a euphony that transcended the burgeoning divisions of their time. Their story isn’t merely a narrative arc; it’s a poignant reflection of the era’s socio-political climate. The rise and fall of this ensemble serve as a microcosm of the larger dissonance that was engulfing a nation poised on the precipice of a totalitarian abyss.

The narrative kernel of “Harmony” is deeply intertwined with the ominous rise of the Nazi regime—a time when the melodious chords of unity were being drowned out by the cacophony of hatred and xenophobia. The euphoria of the Comedian Harmonists’ success was short-lived as the Nazi regime’s iron-fisted approach to racial purity and nationalistic fervor marked a grave discord in Germany’s social harmony. Their tale starkly delineates the contrast between the lyrical unity embodied by the Comedian Harmonists and the divisive ideology that was tightening its grip on Germany’s throat.

As “Harmony” unfolds on stage, it becomes a lens through which audiences can glimpse the tumultuous interplay of music, friendship, and oppressive politics during a critical juncture in history. The characters on stage don the attire of the past, but their struggles resonate with a timeless tenor, echoing the eternal human quest for harmony in a world often rife with discord. Through the medium of music and narrative, “Harmony” transcends the temporal bounds, offering a melodious yet melancholic reflection on an era that witnessed the harmonious chords of camaraderie being overpowered by the dissonant notes of intolerance and prejudice.

Plot Summary

The narrative of “Harmony” begins on a hopeful note with the formation of the Comedian Harmonists in Berlin, 1927. Six young men, each endowed with unique musical prowess, unite to create a sound that soon captures the hearts of audiences far beyond the borders of their homeland. This ensemble transcends the ordinary, melding not just notes, but souls in a symphony of camaraderie and shared dreams.

Their journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim is a testament to the transformative power of music and unity. However, as their star ascends, the socio-political climate in Germany descends into the abyss of Nazi totalitarianism. The ensemble’s composition, a blend of different faiths and backgrounds, becomes the apple of discord in a nation where racial purity starts dictating the rhythm of existence.

The crescendo of their success is abruptly silenced by the encroaching discord of the Nazi regime, leading to an inevitable dissolution. “Harmony” traverses the emotional spectrum as it narrates this bitter-sweet tale of ephemeral success and enduring friendships amidst the escalating tensions of pre-World War II Germany.

Key dramatic moments in “Harmony” are as riveting as they are poignant. The joyous ovation following their first successful performance, the brotherhood among the ensemble members, the romantic entanglements, and the heart-wrenching confrontation with Nazi authorities create a narrative tableau rich in emotional and historical resonance.

The characters in “Harmony” are the beating heart of its narrative. Each member of the Comedian Harmonists is a unique note in the musical chord, contributing to the ensemble’s collective voice. Their individual dreams, fears, and the bonds they forge under the spreading canopy of totalitarian shadows, bring a human touch to the historical narrative.

The juxtaposition of personal aspirations against a backdrop of looming political doom, the ecstasy of newfound fame against the agony of enforced dissolution, and the enduring spirit of hope in a time of despair, all find a vivid representation through the well-etched characters of “Harmony”.

As the curtain falls, the characters may exit the stage, but their echoes linger in the haunting yet hopeful chords of “Harmony”, inviting the audience to reflect on the enduring human spirit and the inexorable power of music even in the face of adversities.

Musical and Theatrical Elements

In the melodious realm of “Harmony,” the musical genius of Barry Manilow intertwines seamlessly with the poetic articulation of Bruce Sussman, creating a tapestry of sound and narrative that transports the audience back in time. Manilow’s score is a river of melodies flowing through the veins of the narrative, carrying with it a blend of emotions that reflect the soaring hopes and crushing despairs of the characters. His compositions, rich in texture and imbued with a nostalgic aura, form the rhythmic backbone of “Harmony.” On the other hand, Sussman’s lyrics are the soulful whispers that breathe life into the historical canvas, painting each scene with a palette of poetic expressions.

The synergy between Manilow’s music and Sussman’s lyrical narrative creates a harmonious dialogue between the past and the present, between the characters and the audience. Each note struck and every word uttered resonates with the emotional authenticity of the Comedian Harmonists’ tale, making “Harmony” more than just a musical but a heartfelt journey through the annals of history.

The choreography, set design, and other theatrical elements in “Harmony” are the unsung heroes that bolster the musical’s narrative, creating a visually and emotionally engaging milieu. The choreography is a visual metaphor of the ensemble’s journey, orchestrating movements that reflect the camaraderie, the joy, and the eventual discord that befalls the Comedian Harmonists. The nimble footwork and synchronized movements on stage echo the harmonious coordination of the ensemble, adding a layer of visual storytelling that complements the musical narrative.

The set design is a silent narrator, its aesthetics reflecting the changing socio-political landscapes that the characters navigate. From the quaint charm of Berlin’s music halls to the ominous shadows of the Nazi regime, the sets morph, mirroring the external and internal turmoils of the characters.

Other theatrical elements like costumes, lighting, and sound design are meticulously crafted to enhance the atmospheric authenticity of “Harmony.” The period-accurate costumes transport the audience to the era, the lighting cues accentuate the emotional tonality of each scene, and the sound design ensures a pristine delivery of Manilow’s score and the ensemble’s harmonious renditions.

In every sense, the choreography, set design, and ancillary theatrical elements are the silent verses in “Harmony’s” melodious narrative, enhancing the audience’s immersion and emotional engagement with the unfolding tale of dreams, discord, and destiny.

It was our first time at the Barrymore Theatre. We truly enjoyed Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town!”You’d never know the theatre seats a thousand! The lobby is small, but who lingers in the outside lobby?! Inside, it’s a well kept simple theatre with a welcoming and warm atmosphere. Our seats were comfortable with a perfect view of the stage - mezzanine level. The staff was cordial. Depending on the play, we will happily come back!

Nice small theatre. Front mezzanine (closer to the stage than at large theatres) seats have good width and legroom and are staggered so rows in front of you are below and heads stay out of your sight lines. Reasonable size restrooms (there are never enough in any theater) and water fountains with cups for free water.

I honestly don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house. I was fortunate enough to get a last minute ticket for opening night of Our Town and was worried I wouldn’t be able to see well, since I could only get the second row from the top of the balcony. Honestly, I was so happy that the view and the sound was great. Love these old theaters!!

We were at The Barrymore for the play, Our Town. A quaint older theatre with great sight lines and decent acoustics. The staff, even the Security team are pleasant and very accommodating. Hint: The stage door is right beside the main entrance and if you are patient and willing to hang around, you might just get to see one of the actors on the way out.

Beautiful old world theater located in the heart of Broadway. So much charm here and beautiful architecture from the ceiling with chandeliers to the entire inside facade. The seating is comfortable and the sound is excellent. I caught one of the final performances of Patriots… what a spectacular show about the rise of Putin.

Watched Patriots here. It's a good theater keeping in mind it's Broadway. So, tiny seats. The aisle seats aren't much help since theaters started installing giant guide rails along the sides. Bathrooms are plentiful but in the basement so you may have to travel as many as 6 flights of stairs from your seat to the bathroom.Good location with a Starbucks at the corner and other assorted delis near hells kitchen.

Just caught a fantastic play about political power plays and it’s a must-see! Imagine a stage alive with secrets. The suspense is non-stop, with unexpected twists that keep you guessing. It’s not just entertaining; it’s a sharp commentary on ambition and democracy. Definitely worth watching if you love dramas that keep you thinking! To see it at this theatre you could feel the energy from all around, not just the stage. Watching plays from the orchestra seats is always a wonderful experience and in the mezzanine it takes on an added layer of energy. The theatre itself becomes a member of the cast. Kudos! To all!

Wonderful historic theater. Just hope the ushers and house crew/security can do a bit more to keep people quiet who arrive late - they get a false sense of insulation because of the back barrier partition, even though they should know better. Always really disruptive to the performance!

Went to see Harmony. A performance was a real Gem. Alive orchestra music, all dances were staged spectacularly, everyone’s costumes were resonating with time of Europe prior to WW2. Loved the special effects on stage, sound effects, immediate changes of decoration, impressive use of old school of marionette performance and a big Tv screen and flash lights performance. This is one of a kind, a must see on Broadway show that will be taking you to a whole different world.

Obviously, we had a great time at the musical, Harmony and the Barrymore theater is beautiful. However I want to share a short story. My son has Downs syndrome and is scared of heights I didn't realize that I had purchased tickets on the upper balcony which has a pretty good incline. He was not able to sit and watch the play so I decided to leave. Then one of the ushers came by and I believe his name was Dan (very tall gentleman) working on the top balcony. He asked me why we were leaving. He made it a point to secure seats in the orchestra level, so that my son and I could see the show. That type of kindness is wonderful to see. As well, the theater did want to charge me the difference with these clearly better and more expensive seats. My son was very happy with the musical Harmony, which was outstanding and he thinks Dan is "cool"Merry Christmas and thank you

Great Theater! We saw Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Hilarious and entertaining. Lots of good jokes and slap stick humor. Very much in the tradition of John Cleese in the Brit-com, Fawlty Towers. I took my 10 year old daughter. We laughed the whole time. There were some adult moments, many of which went over her head. The others provided an interesting opportunity for a good conversation. I highly recommend for a night of laughter and levity.

A cozy, well-run Broadway theatre with a rich history and great lineup. My wife and I went for Peter Pan Goes Wrong and had an excellent experience. The seats are soft and comfortable, and I didn't feel cramped as a 6' man who has long legs. The view from Mezzanine up top was surprisingly good, though we had front row seats, so I'm not sure how it is farther back. The staff is courteous and professional. Overall, the Barrymore theatre is a great place to go for a Broadway show and I recommend it.The only nitpick I have is the concession prices seemed rather steep, $61 for two water bottles, a medium glass of Rose, and a 1 shot drink, before tip. I'm used to West coast theaters in smaller towns with lower cost of living so maybe these prices are normal for Broadway. Also, Peter Pan Goes Wrong was hilarious and well done, can't recommend it enough!

Production Journey

The odyssey of “Harmony” from a nascent idea to a full-fledged Broadway spectacle is a narrative of perseverance and artistic dedication. The seeds were sown when Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman were charmed by the compelling tale of the Comedian Harmonists, leading to the musical’s initial incarnation in 1997 at the Mandell Weiss Theatre in San Diego. However, the journey was far from smooth. A planned Broadway debut in 2004 hit a financial snag, compelling the curtains to fall even before they could rise on the grand stage.

Yet, the unwavering resolve of its creators saw “Harmony” resurfacing in Atlanta in 2013, and Los Angeles in 2014, garnering applause and reigniting the hopes of a Broadway rendition. Each rendition, each applause was a stepping stone towards the grand dream that eventually culminated with “Harmony” gracing the Off-Broadway stage in 2022 before its enthralling debut on Broadway in 2023. The musical’s journey is emblematic of the undying spirit of its creators and the enduring allure of the narrative that it encapsulates.

Over the years, “Harmony” has been nurtured by the hands of many talented individuals. The San Diego production was directed by David Warren, with a creative team that sculpted the musical’s early aesthetic and narrative form. The characters came alive through the performances of actors like Danny Burstein, who played Rabbi, and others who lent their talents to portray the endearing ensemble of the Comedian Harmonists.

In its later iterations, notable contributions came from Warren Carlyle who directed and choreographed the Off-Broadway production, infusing “Harmony” with a fresh visual and narrative vigor. The cast too evolved, with actors like Danny Kornfeld and Sierra Boggess bringing depth and emotional resonance to the characters they portrayed.

Each production of “Harmony” has been a note in its melodious journey, with every director, actor, and creative mind adding their unique tone to the collective composition. The applause that echoes through the halls of the Ethel Barrymore Theatre today is not just for the present rendition, but a tribute to the collective efforts, the ups and downs, and the unwavering spirit that has carried “Harmony” through the years to the Broadway stage.

Direction and Choreography

In the realm of “Harmony,” Warren Carlyle’s deft direction and choreography are akin to the conductor’s baton, orchestrating a visual and narrative symphony that enhances the musical’s thematic cadence. Carlyle, with his seasoned theatrical acumen, navigates the narrative through the turbulent waters of history with a visual storytelling that’s as evocative as it is precise. His direction isn’t just a route through the plot but a journey through the emotional landscapes of the characters and the socio-political tumult of the era. 🎭

His choreographic vision is a visual echo of the musical’s thematic essence, creating a dance of emotions on stage that moves in harmony with the narrative beats. Through meticulously choreographed sequences, Carlyle brings out the camaraderie among the ensemble, the joy of musical exploration, and the somber reality of the encroaching discord, manifesting the emotional gravitas and historical resonance of “Harmony.”

Carlyle’s vision is translated on stage through a seamless amalgam of movement, expressions, and staging that breathe life into the Comedian Harmonists’ tale. Every step, every gesture, and every scene transition is orchestrated to carry the narrative forward while evoking the desired emotional response from the audience. The stage becomes a canvas where Carlyle’s choreographic brushstrokes paint the characters’ emotions, the socio-political tension, and the ephemeral nature of harmony in a turbulent world.

The synchronization between the actors, the harmony in their movements, and the spatial choreography are reflective of the musical harmony that the Comedian Harmonists aspired for. Each scene, whether it’s a jubilant performance or a heart-wrenching confrontation, is staged with a choreographic finesse that enhances the narrative’s emotional impact.

Carlyle’s direction and choreography are not mere functional aspects of the production; they are the heartbeats that lend “Harmony” its pulsating rhythm, drawing the audience into the narrative whirlpool, making them laugh, cheer, and reflect as the tale of the Comedian Harmonists unfolds on the Broadway stage.

Critical Reception and Awards

“Harmony” has orchestrated a noteworthy performance not just on stage but also in the eyes of critics. Its narrative rhythm, historical resonance, and musical charisma have struck a chord with reviewers, garnering a bouquet of appreciative critiques. Though it’s the applause of the audience that lends the true melody to “Harmony’s” journey, the accolades and laudatory reviews add a sweet note to its critical reception.

The musical’s ability to weave a historical narrative with an emotive thread, all wrapped up in a melodious ensemble, has been a high note among critiques. While accolades are yet to make their way to “Harmony,” the critical appreciation it has received sings a tune of promise and recognition in the theatrical landscape.

The New York Times bestowed upon “Harmony” the honor of a Critic’s Pick, an accolade that resonates with significance in the Broadway community. The review praised the musical as “impossible to forget,” a testament to the indelible impact “Harmony” has on its audience. This recognition from such a reputable source is like a standing ovation in the critical realm, propelling “Harmony” into the spotlight of notable theatrical pieces.

Other reviews too have hummed the tune of appreciation, highlighting the musical’s engaging narrative, historical depth, and the emotional roller-coaster it takes the audience on. The journey of the Comedian Harmonists, as depicted in “Harmony,” has struck a harmonious note among critics, echoing the sentiments of a bygone era while resonating with contemporary audiences.

In the panorama of reviews, “Harmony” emerges as a musical that doesn’t just narrate a tale but evokes an emotive resonance, earning a melody of appreciation in the critical chorus of the theatrical world.
